ANCA Blood Test Panel - More Information

The ANCA test panel, also known as an anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies test, measures the ANCA blood levels.

Historically, anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies have been divided into subcategories known as C-ANCA and P-ANCA. These classifications were derived from the respective patterns of immunofluorescence identified during ANCA testing. Over time, an improved understanding of the categories has led to defining C-ANCA by its predominant antigen - proteinase-3 (PR-3) and P-ANCA by its predominant antigen, myeloperoxidase (MPO).

ANCA lab testing is helpful as a screening tool for vascular diseases (hence the name ANCA vasculitides) such as glomerulonephritis, Churg-Strauss syndrome and polyarteritis. ANCA testing may also be helpful in evaluating autoimmune conditions such as SLE and drug-induced lupus as well as inflammatory gastrointestinal conditions such as autoimmune hepatitis, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

ANCA testing near you involves getting your blood drawn at a Quest Diagnostics lab. Once your ANCA lab results are ready, they will be electronically available and include an interpretation provided by the lab. As can be seen on the ANCA sample report link above, results are provided for the proteinase-3 (PR-3) antibody and myeloperoxidase antibody separately. Underneath each ANCA result is an interpretive guide to understand how to interpret whether your ANCA blood levels were consistent with antibody detection or not.
