Calcitonin Blood Test - More Information
The calcitonin test, also known as a calcitonin lab test, measures calcitonin blood levels.
Calcitonin is a hormone produced by cells of the thyroid and is thought to be a product of the CALC1 gene. Calcitonin plays an important role in the metabolism of specific blood minerals in the body. In particular, while parathyroid hormone (PTH) increases blood calcium levels, calcitonin prevents normal bone breakdown which ultimately lowers blood calcium levels. In this capacity, calcitonin also plays an important role in maintaining the integrity of our skeletons, particularly during high calcium use states such as lactation. Additionally, through its activity on bone metabolism, calcitonin also ultimately lowers blood phosphorus levels.
To get a calcitonin test near you at a Quest Diagnostics lab, simply order online and get your blood drawn at the scheduled location. Once your calcitonin lab results are ready, they will be available for download. The calcitonin lab results, as can be seen on the sample calcitonin lab report above, will show a calcitonin level which can be compared against calcitonin hormone reference range levels provided by the lab.
