Estriol Blood Test - More Information
The estriol test, sometimes know as an E3 test or an estriol blood test, measures the estriol blood level. Estriol is considered a type of estrogen - a major class of sex hormones (particularly in women) - although it has weak overall effects.
In contrast to estradiol, estriol has a very limited role in a nonpregnant women and men. The situation changes in pregnant women, however, as estriol is produced by the placenta in high levels (1000x normal levels) and is sometimes ordered along with the estradiol test to understand how these hormones are changing. Estriol from the placenta is the product of DHEA metabolism by the fetal adrenal glands. The estriol hormone is also excreted from the body quickly and accounts for up to 90% of the estrogens in pregnant women. In some instances, the estriol level may be used as a biomarker during a Down syndrome workup in a pregnant woman. In general, a large proportion of the overall estriol is bioavailable in the blood at any given time.
To get an estriol test near you, just order online and get your blood drawn at the selected Quest Diagnostics lab location. Once your estriol lab results are ready, they will be available for download. The estriol blood level is reported as a numerical value and can be compared against the reference range provided by the lab.
Estriol may be better known as a prescription medication available in tablet, suppository and cream forms. While not approved in the United States as a prescription medication, estriol is widely used in various parts of the world and especially in Europe.
