Hepatitis B Surface Antigen Test - More Information
The Hepatitis B Surface Antigen test, or HBsAg test, is a blood test that measures the level of this Hep B antigen in the blood.
The Hepatitis B surface antigen blood test is used to check for a Hepatitis B infection. After an exposure to Hep B through contact with the body fluids of an infected person, the blood will start showing evidence of the infection through measurable levels of Hep B surface antigen. In contrast to the Hepatitis B surface antibody titer which checks immunity secondary to a prior vaccination, this blood test is used to check for an actual infection.
In addition to checking for a Hepatitis B infection after an exposure, the HBsAg test has some other uses. This test is commonly used as part of a special MMA blood panel used to screen people who are fighting in combative sports like mixed martial arts or boxing prior to fighting.
