Histamine Blood Test - More Information
The histamine test measures the plasma histamine blood level.
Histamine is an important molecule in the body that helps with inflammation and gut mobility. Additionally, histamine is used as a neurotransmitter in parts of the nervous system. Released by mast cells and basophils in the immune system, histamine is a major part of the immune response to elements perceived as foreign by the body. When mast cells and basophils are triggered by the presence of a class of antibodies known as IgE antibodies, they release histamine to start various cascades in the immune system to protect the body.
Histamine release is important in the allergic response. Histamine causes blood vessels to open and increases space in capillaries, leading to fluid shifts that cause the symptoms of itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, nasal congestion and a runny nose that is often seen in an allergic response. Histamine in the gastrointestinal tract is broken down by an enzyme called diamine oxidase (DAO). Low DAO levels have become of interest as far as the concept of histamine intolerance.
