IGFBP-3 Blood Test - More Information
The IGFBP-3 test, also known as an IGFBP-3 lab test and an IGFBP-3 blood test, measures the IGFBP-3 blood level.
IGFBP-3, or insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 3, is a type of protein that binds insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). It is the main carrier protein for IGF in the blood and for delivery to tissues. To transport IGF, it forms a complex with IGF and another acid-labile subunit (ALS) protein that separates and partially breaks down when it reaches the target tissue. Because of its important function as an IGF transport protein, it is often ordered with the IGF test.
Inside of tissues, IGFBP-3 may also have a role in binding IGF and preventing it from interacting with specialized receptors. IGFBP-3 blood levels are stimulated by growth hormone levels and is often tested with the growth hormone test. IGFBP-3 production is also stimulated by other molecules such as vitamin D and retinoic acid. Because IGFBP-3 binds IGF-1 readily, it can slow down the growth effects of IGF-1 on tissues and, as a result, may have an effect on reducing tumor growth.
To get an IGFBP-3 test near you, order online and get tested at the Quest Diagnostics lab location that you chose. Once your IGFBP-3 lab report is ready, it will be available for download. As can be seen on the sample IGFBP-3 lab results, the IGFBP-3 blood level is reported as a number and can be compared against the reference range provided by the lab. IGFBP-3 lab results are reported in mg / L.
