Osteocalcin Blood Test - More Information
The osteocalcin test, sometimes known as an osteocalcin level test and an osteocalcin N-MID lab test, measures the osteocalcin blood level.
Osteocalcin is a protein found in the bone matrix made by the cells that make bone (osteoblasts). Found in large quantities (second only to collagen), osteocalcin binds calcium and helps to build bone in the body. Technically referred to as bone gamma-carboxyglutamic acid-containing protein (BGLAP), osteocalcin levels are correlated with the rate of bone turnover and bone mineral density (BMD). Osteocalcin blood testing is often used to evaluate conditions such as osteoporosis, hyperparathyroidism and Paget's disease. Osteocalcin testing is also done to evaluate how the bone might respond to drug therapies.
Osteocalcin also has some other roles in the body seemingly unrelated to bone formation. Osteocalcin levels can help stimulate testosterone production and the release of insulin and adiponectin. This osteocalcin test, along with the CTX test and the NTX test, is a component of the osteoporosis test panel.
