Pineapple IgE Test - More Information
The pineapple allergy test measures the pineapple IgE antibody blood level.
Pineapples are a juicy fruit that is consumed worldwide. Eaten alone and used as an additive to foods, pineapples are an excellent source of the element manganese. Pineapples contain an enzyme called bromelain which may be the source of pineapple allergies in some people. Used as a meat tenderizer, bromelain may be the cause of pineapple allergy symptoms such as watery eyes and itchy throat after consuming pineapple fruit.
This pineapple IgE test uses the ImmunoCAP® lab methodology. Pineapple IgE antibody blood test results are reported in kU/L and can be compared against the IgE antibody reference range provided by the lab to determine the IgE allergy class to pineapple. The pineapple allergy test is a component of the fruit allergy test panel.
This pineapple allergy blood test is less painful and has less side effects than historical allergy testing methods such as the skin prick test (SPT). In the skin prick, or scratch, test, serum containing pineapple components are injected into the skin. If you are allergic to pineapple, you will, unfortunately, have a mild allergic reaction and all of the symptoms that go with it. Instead, this allergy blood test can check for the pineapple allergy without causing an allergic reaction, resulting in a much more comfortable lab testing experience through a simple blood draw.
