TPO Test - More Information
The TPO test, also known as a thyroid peroxidase antibody, TPO antibody, and TPO Ab test, is a lab test that measures the level of TPO antibodies in the blood.
Generally speaking, antibodies are components of the immune system that increase in number when the immune system perceives that it is fighting an infection. In that context, abnormal TPO antibody levels suggest that the body is attacking its own thyroid for some reason. While the immune system does produce other antibodies such as TSI that interfere with the normal functioning of the thyroid gland, TPO antibodies are the ones most frequently found.
In particular, the TPO blood test is helpful in evaluating people who are having symptoms that are suggestive of two specific thyroid disorders - Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Suspicion of one of these infrequent conditions usually occurs after identifying abnormalities during initial testing of the TSH blood level as well as the T3 and T4 levels.
To get a TPO test near you, simply order online and get your blood drawn at the Quest Diagnostics lab. Once your TPO lab results are ready, they will be available for download. As can be seen on the sample TPO lab report, the TPO blood levels are reported as a numerical value and can be compared against the reference range provided by the lab.
