Gluten Blood Test - More Information

The gluten allergy test, sometimes known as a gluten blood test, gluten allergy lab test, gluten allergy blood test and a gluten IgE test, checks for gluten IgE antibody blood levels.

Gluten is a class of proteins bound into a complex that is found in grains. In addition to being found in grains, gluten has a wide range of industrial uses and is found in many of the foods that we eat. Gluten is strong and elastic, enabling the binding of components of food and increasing its stability.

Unfortunately, dietary gluten can cause problems in humans. Gluten exposure has been associated to celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder that can cause damage to the intestinal linings. Gluten can also cause immediate allergic reactions in sensitive people, characterized by an increase in IgE antibody levels as measured by this gluten blood test.

This gluten IgE test uses the ImmunoCAP® lab methodology. To get a gluten allergy test near you, just order online and get tested at Quest Diagnostics. Once the gluten allergy lab results are ready, they will be available for download. As can be seen on the sample gluten allergy lab report above, gluten IgE antibody blood levels are reported in kU/L and can be compared against the reference range provided by the lab to determine the IgE allergy class to gluten.

This gluten allergy blood test is less painful and has less side effects than historical allergy testing methods such as the skin prick test (SPT). In the skin prick, or scratch, test, serum containing gluten components are injected into the skin. If you are allergic to gluten, you will, unfortunately, have a mild allergic reaction and all of the symptoms that go with it. Instead, this allergy blood test can check for a gluten allergy without causing an allergic reaction, resulting in a much more comfortable lab testing experience through a simple blood draw.

The gluten allergy test is sometimes ordered with the celiac disease test panel for additional screening.
