The fecal occult blood test (FOBT) checks for blood in the stool.
Test Type: Stool
Test Results: Typically 4 days
The fecal occult blood test, also known as a fecal globin by immunochemistry test, InSure® test, hemoglobin stool test, FOBT lab test, stool blood test, FOBT test, or an occult blood test, checks for blood in the stool.
Fecal occult blood testing is a way to check for bleeding from the lower gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Lower GI bleeding might occur from polyps, diverticulitis, and inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis and can lead to iron deficiency anemia. This fecal occult blood test is an immunochromatographic test that detects hemoglobin from blood in the stool.
To get an FOBT test near you, order online and submit your specimen at the Quest Diagnostics lab you selected. Once your fecal occult blood test lab results are ready, they will be electronically available. As can be seen on the FOBT sample lab report above, the fecal globin by immunochemistry test will be reported as negative if no blood is detected.
Please note that this FOBT test could be positive for up to three days prior and three days after menses. Also, the fecal occult blood test can be positive if hemorrhoids are present.
