Estrone, also known as E1, is one of 3 types of estrogen. Estrone (E1) is a sex hormone made from androstenedione and cholesterol. Estrone is typically made in adipose cells and sex glands. In obesity, estrone is made from androstenedione in higher quantities. In addition to estradiol and estriol, it is considered a type of estrogen hormone although it has a much weaker effect in the body.
