RPR Blood Test - More Information
The RPR test, also known as an RPR lab test, RPR blood test, rapid plasma reagin test and a syphilis test, is a screening blood test for syphilis.
The RPR blood test screens for syphilis infection antibodies and is also utilized for monitoring the response to therapy for syphilis. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by a bacteria called Treponema pallidum. It is typically passed from person to person through contact with a sore on the genitals or mouth. Syphilis can be tricky to diagnose as symptoms may not occur for a long time or it may present with a variety of symptoms that look like other diseases. Symptoms may include a single sore, a rash, fevers, fatigue, or hair loss. For people interested in general STD screening, the RPR test can be found as part of the STD test panel.
To get an RPR test near you, order online and get your blood drawn at the selected Quest Diagnostics lab. Once your RPR lab report is ready, it will be available for download electronically. As can be seen on the sample RPR lab results above, the lab will report a non-reactive result if the RPR test is non-reactive.
The RPR test can have false-positive results in people with old age, infections, pregnancy, autoimmune disease or cancer. If this RPR test is positive, confirmatory testing will be performed for no additional charge.
