Total PSA Blood Test - More Information

The total PSA test, also known as a total prostate-specific antigen lab test, measures the total PSA blood level.

Prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, is a protein produced by the special cells in the prostate gland in men. Also known as gamma-seminoprotein and kallikrein-3 (KLK3), PSA acts as an enzyme and enables sperm to swim without restriction by causing liquefaction of the semen. Most men have small amounts of PSA in their prostate glands. Despite its name, prostate-specific antigen is not a true antigen. PSA has also been found in small amounts in women and the clinical significance of PSA blood levels is not well understood.

High PSA levels have been associated with prostate cancer, prostate inflammation (prostatitis) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Historically, PSA lab testing was routinely done as a way to screen for prostate cancer with lab testing but some bodies feel that the potential benefit is low. Abnormal PSA blood levels typically lead to a prostate biopsy to confirm that no cancer exists. PSA testing is also performed as part of ongoing monitoring in men who have had prostate cancer previously and rising levels are often considered concerning. This particular PSA test measures the total PSA level which represents the amount of prostate-specific antigen that is both bound and unbound in the blood.
