T3 Blood Test - More Information
The total T3 test, also known as the triiodothyronine test and T-3 test, is a blood test that measures the level of T3. In addition to T4, T3 is a major hormone produced by the thyroid gland.
T3 is released by the thyroid gland when the TSH level is high. The total T3 level represents the amount of blood T3 that is both unbound and bound to carrier proteins.
The total T3 levels, often when measured in conjunction with other hormones such as the free T3 level and the TSH test, help paint a picture of how well the thyroid gland is functioning.
