Direct Bilirubin Blood Test - More Information
This bilirubin test, also known as a bilirubin direct test, and bilirubin blood test, bilirubin lab test, measures the direct bilirubin blood level.
Direct bilirubin levels are one type of bilirubin found in the body and elevated levels can be seen in liver, gall bladder and metabolic disorders. Measuring direct bilirubin blood levels specifically is helpful in differentiating the cause of jaundice (i.e. yellowing of the skin and/or eyes) between liver and non-liver causes. Jaundice caused by something blocking the liver from excreting bilirubin (e.g. gallstones) will cause direct bilirubin levels to be increased in addition to indirect bilirubin levels. If the liver itself is having problems processing bilirubin, then direct bilirubin levels will typically be normal while indirect bilirubin levels will be high which makes it useful as a jaundice test. Bilirubin testing is sometimes done at the same time as the ALT blood test and the AST blood test.
This bilirubin test is particularly useful for people who are looking to track their direct bilirubin levels. For people who want a snapshot of all types of bilirubin, the LFT test panel may be a better choice.
To get a direct bilirubin test near you, just order online and get your blood drawn at the Quest Diagnostics lab. Once your bilirubin lab report is ready, it will be available for download. As can be seen on the sample bilirubin lab results above, the bilirubin blood level is reported as a number which can be compared against the reference ranges provided by the lab.
