The Lyme PCR urine test, also known as a Lyme disease PCR test, checks for the presence of Borrelia spp DNA in the urine.
Results from this PCR urine test will be reported in a qualitative results (e.g. not detected) as opposed to numerically. This particular assay has been validated pursuant to the CLIA regulations and is used for clinical purposes. It has not been cleared by the FDA because the FDA has, as of 2017, determined that such clearance for this Lyme PCR test is not necessary with Quest Diagnostics.
This Lyme PCR test uses a lab methodology known as real-time polymerase chain reaction. Polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR or PCR) is a process that takes small amounts of DNA and amplifies it to make it easier to detect. Using this methodology, it is easier to identify small amounts of Borrelia spp DNA.
