Anti-dsDNA Antibody Test - More Information
The anti-dsDNA test, also known as a DNA (ds) antibody test, measures the anti-dsDNA antibody blood levels.
Anti-dsDNA antibodies, sometimes called double-stranded DNA antibodies, are proteins produced by the immune system that attacks the DNA within the body's own cells. The actual trigger that leads to the production of anti-dsDNA antibodies is not yet fully understood although it may have something to do with DNA existing outside of a cell after a cell is destroyed. Anti-dsDNA antibodies are of clinical significance because high blood levels are very specific for diagnosing SLE and also lupus nephritis. Additionally, elevated levels correlate with the severity of SLE which makes anti-dsDNA antibodies useful as a blood marker to evaluate disease management.
