More Gonorrhea Urine Test Information

Gonorrhea is an infection caused by a bacteria called Neisseria gonorrhea. N. gonorrhea is spread by sexual contact with an infected person which is why it is thought of as a sexually transmitted infection. The CDC estimates that there are 820,000 new gonococcal infections in the United States annually with a majority of them occurring in people 15-24 years of age. While often presenting without any symptoms, gonorrhea infections can also manifest with urinary burning, discharge, and pelvic pain. Gonorrhea infections frequently coexist with chlamydia infections which is why concurrent chlamydia and gonorrhea testing is typically recommended.

This gonorrhea test uses a transcription-mediated amplification (TMA) methodology to check for the presence of gonorrhea RNA.

The best way to avoid a gonorrhea infection is to abstain from sexual contact with an infected person. Condom use does offer some measure of protection from gonorrhea transmission. Fortunately, gonorrhea infections can usually be treated with antibiotics and typically chlamydia treatment is provided at the same time.
