Gliadin Test FAQ

What is a gliadin test?

The gliadin test checks the blood levels of Gliadin IgA and IgG antibodies.

Why is a gliadin test important?

Gliadin antibodies are produced by the immune system in response to exposure from gliadin, a protein in wheat. Most patients with celiac disease have these antibodies. These antibodies help identify inflammation related to gluten and track the response to a gluten-free diet. Gliadin IgA antibodies typically disappear within 6 months and IgG antibodies last up to 1 year after eating a gluten-free diet.

What type of specimen will I submit?

This Gliadin Test is a blood test.

Do I need to fast to take this test?

Fasting is not necessary.

How long does it take to get test results?

It typically takes 4 business days or less.

Gliadin Blood Test - More Information

The gliadin test, also known as a gliadin lab test, anti-gliadin antibody test, and a deaminated gliadin level test, measures gliadin IgA and IgA antibody levels in the blood.

Gliadin is a water-soluble protein that is found in different types of cereals in the diet. Gliadin is a component of gluten and, in the presence of acid, breaks down into deamidated gliadin. In certain people (e.g. celiac disease), gliadin can trigger the body to generate an immune response to gliadin, causing collateral damage to the lining of the intestines in the process.

As part of this immune response, gliadin IgA and IgG antibodies are generated and detectable through blood tests. Getting a gliadin blood test near you at a Quest Diagnostics lab can help identify whether gliadin antibodies are present in your blood. Once your blood is drawn, your gliadin antibody lab results will be available for download. As can be seen on the sample gliadin lab report above, gliadin antibody blood levels will be reported as a number which can be compared against the reference range provided by the lab. Gliadin antibodies are sometimes tested along with tTG antibodies as part of a celiac disease blood test.

Gliadin sensitivity can be subtle and hard to detect which is why conditions such as celiac disease are often undiagnosed. Today, the only known way to avoid damaged and inflammation to the intestinal tract induced by gliadin is through a gluten-free diet.
