Gliadin Blood Test - More Information
The gliadin test, also known as a gliadin lab test, anti-gliadin antibody test, and a deamidated gliadin level test, measures gliadin IgA and IgA antibody levels in the blood.
Gliadin is a water-soluble protein that is found in different types of cereals in the diet. Gliadin is a component of gluten and, in the presence of acid, breaks down into deamidated gliadin. In certain people (e.g. celiac disease), gliadin can trigger the body to generate an immune response to gliadin, causing collateral damage to the lining of the intestines in the process.
As part of this immune response, deamidated gliadin IgA and IgG antibodies are generated and detectable through blood tests. Getting a gliadin blood test near you at a Quest Diagnostics lab can help identify whether gliadin antibodies are present in your blood. Once your blood is drawn, your gliadin antibody lab results will be available for download. As can be seen on the sample gliadin lab report above, gliadin antibody blood levels will be reported as a number which can be compared against the reference range provided by the lab. Gliadin antibodies are sometimes tested along with tTG antibodies as part of a celiac disease test.
Gliadin sensitivity can be subtle and hard to detect which is why conditions such as celiac disease are often undiagnosed. Today, the only known way to avoid damaged and inflammation to the intestinal tract induced by gliadin is through a gluten-free diet.
