Ketone Blood Test - More Information
The beta-hydroxybutyrate test, also known as a bHBA test and a ketone lab test, measures the beta-hydroxybutyrate blood level.
Beta-hydroxybutyrate is a ketone produced by the liver from acetoacetate. When blood glucose levels are low, the body produces beta-hydroxybutyrate from acetoacetate as a fuel source for the brain as it can cross the blood-brain barrier to fuel structures in the nervous system. Blood levels of this molecule are elevated in fasting states and tracking beta-hydroxybutyrate levels has become of increasing interest for people pursuing ketosis and intermittent fasting diets. Elevated beta-hydroxybutyrate blood levels can also be seen in other ketoacidosis states (e.g. alcoholic, diabetic).
