CA 15-3 Blood Test - More Information
The CA 15-3 test, also known as a CA 15-3 blood test, CA 15-3 lab test and cancer antigen 15-3 lab test, measures the CA 15-3 blood level.
CA 15-3 is a helpful blood marker in the management of breast cancer. CA 15-3 levels are used to check for breast cancer recurrence and, at times, to get a rough approximation of how much tumor is in the body. Not all types of breast cancer tumors secrete CA 15-3 so it is not a useful blood marker in all people but it is useful to track on an ongoing basis if it was detected early on. Liver disease may artificially increase levels.
To get a CA 15-3 test near you, order online and get tested at the Quest Diagnostics location you selected to get your blood drawn. Once your CA 15-3 lab results are ready, they will be available for download. As can be seen on the sample CA 15-3 lab report above, the CA 15-3 blood level is reported as a number and can be compared against the reference range provided by the lab.
The CA 15-3 level test is also sometimes used to monitor for cancer disease activity. CA 15-3 blood levels cannot be used in isolation as absolute evidence of the presence or absence of a disease and all results should be evaluated in conjunction with a licensed medical provider. The CA 15-3 test is sometimes ordered with the AFP blood test, CA 125 blood test, and the CEA blood test.
