CTX Blood Test - More Information
The CTX test, also known as a CTX blood test, CTX lab test, C-telopeptide test, collagen type I c-telopeptide test and beta-crosslaps test, measures the CTX blood level.
CTX is a blood marker that is used in assessing bone metabolism. More specifically, CTX lab testing helps assess type I collagen concentrations as related to their crosslink peptide sequences. When bone is broken down, these sequences are cut off from the bone matrix and the concentration of these sequences at any point in time in the blood can help evaluate how quickly bone is being metabolized. CTX blood testing has become of interest with dentists who perform implants as CTX levels can evaluate how well the bones will heal after bone grafting and implant procedures. Additionally, CTX lab testing is utilized in monitoring people who are taking a class of medications known as bisphosphonates for osteoporosis prevention. This C-telopeptide test is often ordered with the NTX test for a better assessment of bone metabolism, both of which are part of the osteoporosis blood test panel.
Getting a CTX test near you at a Quest Diagnostics lab is a fairly standard process although a blood draw around 8-10 am is recommended for best results. Additionally, an overnight fast of twelve hours is recommend prior to getting tested and biotin supplementation should be avoided for 72 hours before the testing is performed. As can be seen on the sample C-telopeptide (CTX) lab report, C-telopeptide blood levels are reported as numbers which can be compared against the reference range provided by the lab.
