D-Dimer Blood Test - More Information
The D-dimer test, also known as a D-dimer blood test and D-dimer lab test, measures the D-dimer blood level.
D-dimer is a type of protein that is found in the blood as a result of the breakdown of fibrin, a blood product used in clotting. Normally absent in the blood, d-dimer starts becoming measurable when the clotting cascade has been turned on. Because fibrin is a core component of a blood clot, the elevated d-dimer levels are thought to correlate with increased clotting. More specifically, the d-dimer is used to look for a blood clot (e.g. venous thrombosis or pulmonary embolism).
To get a D-dimer test near you at Quest Diagnostics, simply order online and get tested at the lab. Once your D-dimer test lab report is ready, it will be available for download. As can be seen on the sample D-dimer lab test results above, the quantitative d-dimer test result will be reported as a number. D-dimer blood results are reported in mcg/mL and can be compared to the D-dimer reference range provided by the lab.
