Fibrinogen Blood Test - More Information
The fibrinogen test, also known as a fibrinogen blood test, fibrinogen lab test and factor I test, measures the clauss fibrinogen activity blood level.
Fibrinogen is a protein that is found in the blood and is used in clot formation. Specifically, fibrinogen is metabolized into fibrin (the core part of a blood clot) using the enzyme, thrombin. The conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin is typically limited by fibrin itself to control the total fibrin production. Fibrinogen levels also rise in response to inflammation and cancer in the body.
Low fibrinogen levels can occur from genetic disorders, leading to an inability to form adequate amounts of fibrin and, as a result, clotting disorders. High levels of fibrin from cancer or inflammatory states, on the other hand, can cause excessive clotting.
To get a fibrinogen test near you at Quest Diagnostics, simply order online and get tested at the lab. Once your fibrinogen test lab report is ready, it will be available for download. As can be seen on the sample fibrinogen lab test results above, the quantitative fibrinogen activity test result will be reported as a number and can be compared to the reference range provided by the lab.
