Gastrin Blood Test - More Information
The gastrin test, also known as a gastrin lab test and gastrin level test, measures the gastrin blood level.
Gastrin is a hormone produced by the G cells in the duodenum, pancreas and stomach. A peptide molecule, gastrin activates the parietal cells of the stomach to produce HCl, or gastric acid. Normally, stomach distention (i.e. food in the stomach), specific types of proteins, and high calcium levels trigger gastrin production. Gastrin production is blocked by specific hormones and adequate gastric acid levels in the stomach.
Gastrin levels are abnormally high in people who have a gastrin-producing tumor (gastrinoma) - a syndrome called Zollinger-Ellison. High gastrin levels may also be present in the setting of an H. pylori infection which is why it is sometimes performed with the H. pylori test. Conversely, gastrin levels can be abnormally low when the immune system is pathologically triggered to produced antibodies against parietal cells, ultimately leading to low acid levels.
