Graves' Disease Blood Test - More Information
The Graves' disease test, also known as a Graves' disease blood test and a Graves' disease lab test, measures blood markers that help evaluate Graves' disease.
Graves' disease is a thyroid condition in which the body's immune system attacks the thyroid. Occasionally referred to as toxic diffuse goiter, Graves' disease frequently causes thyroid enlargement as well as high thyroid activity (i.e. hyperthyroidism or overactive thyroid).
In Graves' disease, the immune system produces antibodies called thyroid stimulating immunoglobulin (TSI) which mimic the structure of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). These TSI antibodies then attach to the the thyroid gland and is why the thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulin (TSI) test to measure TSI antibody levels is done as part of this Graves' disease test. The thyroid gland, thinking it is getting a signal that the body needs more thyroid hormone production, produces relatively large amounts of thyroid hormones beyond what is needed by the body. This excess of thyroid hormone causes symptoms of hyperthyroidism, including anxiety, palpitations, weight loss, and diarrhea. Graves' disease can also cause bulging of the eyes and changes on the skin over the shins (pretibial myxedema). Graves' disease is more commonly found in families and people with other autoimmune diseases.
This Graves' disease test panel also includes the free T3 test, total T3 test, free T4 test, total T4 test, TPO test and TSH test. These blood tests provide a wide range of information that help with determining whether a Graves' disease autoimmune process is going on.
To get a Graves' disease test near you, simply order online and get tested at your selected Quest Diagnostics location. Once your Graves' disease lab results are ready, they can be downloaded. As can be seen on the sample Graves' disease lab report, individual components of the Graves' disease test panel will be reported as numbers that can be compared against the reference ranges provided by the lab.
