IL-6 Blood Test - More Information
The interleukin-6 test, also known as an IL-6 blood test, interleukin-6 lab test, IL-6 HS test and an IL-6 test, measures the interleukin-6 blood level.
Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a type of protein known as an interleukin. Also considered a type of cytokine, IL-6 is secreted by cells in the immune system known as macrophages and T cells. When the body is fighting an infection or is under stress from damage or trauma, IL-6 levels increase to help reduce inflammation in the body. IL-6 helps induce fever and the production of proteins and white blood cells as part of the immune response. When interleukin-6 levels are abnormally high, damage can occur in various parts of the body. As a cytokine, the IL-6 lab test is frequently ordered with the interferon alpha test, interleukin-1 test, interleukin-2 test and the TNF blood test.
To get an interleukin-6 test near you, just order online and get your blood drawn at the selected Quest Diagnostics lab. Once your interleukin-6 lab report is ready, it will be available for download. As can be seen on the sample interleukin-6 lab results, the interleukin-6 blood level is reported as a number and can be compared against the reference range provided by the lab.
