PCOS Blood Test Panel - More Information
The PCOS test panel, also known as a polycystic ovarian syndrome test, measures blood markers that help in the evaluation of PCOS. This PCOS lab panel includes the androstenedione test, CBC test, CMP test, DHEA test, glucose tolerance test, hCG test, insulin test, lipid panel test, prolactin test, testosterone total & free test and TSH test.
Polycystic ovarian syndrome, or PCOS, is a condition in which women has high levels of male hormones. PCOS is characterized by ovaries with multiple cysts that produce excessive amounts of male hormones (androgens). PCOS appears to be genetically transmitted but is not always expressed in terms of symptoms. Obesity seems to increase the likelihood that PCOS symptoms will be present in a particular person.
Symptoms of PCOS include abnormal menstrual periods (ranging from none to heavy), infertility, skin thickening, excessive hair growth and acne. PCOS can also cause complicating medical issues such as cancer, cardiac disease, diabetes and mood disorders. PCOS is typically diagnosed by having at least two out of three of high levels of specific hormones, ovarian cysts on pelvic ultrasound and lack of ovulation. Hormone levels that are typically high in PCOS include androstenedione, DHEA and testosterone. Other hormones and routine labs should also be tested as they are in this PCOS test panel to exclude other conditions that might be causing the PCOS symptoms.
