Androstenedione Blood Test - More Information
The androstenedione test, also known as an androstenedione lab test, measures the androstenedione blood level.
Androstenedione is a steroid hormone produced in both the adrenal glands and ovaries in normal women. Androstenedione levels peak around 7 AM and a nadir around 4 PM. Levels rise after puberty, peak at about age 20, and decline at menopause. Androstenedione is needed to make androgen hormones such as estrone and testosterone. ACTH stimulates the production of androstenedione in the adrenal glands.
Although androstenedione's primary importance is as an intermediate molecule for other hormones, androstenedione does have weak hormone effects that are similar to estrogen. Some people use androstenedione as a dietary supplement and it has been seen to increase both testosterone and estradiol levels at high enough doses which is why some people order the androstenedione test with the estradiol test and the testosterone test. Androstenedione use in professional sports has generated controversy in the past.
Androstenedione testing is useful in evaluating patients with a possible excess of androgen hormones. Also, this blood test is used in managing people with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). Androstenedione is increased in 60% of cases of excessive hair growth.
