HTLV Blood Test - More Information
The HTLV test, also known as a human T-lymphotropic virus antibody lab test, HTLV lab test, HTLV antibody test and HTLV 1 & 2 test, measures the HLTV I and II blood levels.
HTLV, or human T-cell lymphotropic virus, is a class of viruses that cause various types of blood cancers and inflammatory conditions. Known as a type of retrovirus, the two predominant types are HTLV type 1 (HTLV-1) and HTLV type 2 (HTLV-2). HTLV-1 is associated with leukemia and muscle disorders. HTLV-2 may be linked to lung and nervous system conditions. HTLV can be spread by sexual contact, blood transfusion or contact to infected blood in other ways. While some people develop symptoms from an HTLV infection, many people have no symptoms at all.
Getting an HTLV test near you at a Quest Diagnostics lab is straightforward after you place your order online. Once your HTLV blood test results are available, you can download them electronically. As can be seen on the sample HTLV lab report above, the HTLV lab test results will say nonreactive if no HTLV antibodies were detected.
HTLV infections can be communicated via breast milk which is why it is included in the breast milk donor screening panel.
