Myoglobin Urine Test - More Information
The myoglobin urine test measures the level of myoglobin in the urine.
In the setting of normal muscle breakdown, myoglobin is produced and is excreted from the body in the urine made by the kidneys. In the setting of muscle damage, myoglobin levels can rise to high levels and, in the process of trying to filter the excess myoglobin, products of myoglobin metabolism can cause damage to the kidneys. As a result, myoglobin urine levels are sometimes used as a way to assess kidney health in the setting of muscle damage. For an assessment of myoglobin blood levels, the myoglobin blood test is more useful.
